How to Resign Without Burning Bridges

 Step 1:
Prepare your letter of resignation on quality letter paper and not on notepaper or company letterhead. Use a formal layout with correct grammar and wording.

Step 2:

Hand written resignations should be carried out with a quality ink pen, preferably blue ink, with smooth and concise stokes.

Step 3:

Address your letter to the appropriate supervisor or Human Resource representative.

Step 4:
Begin your letter with a statement of appreciation such as, ‘Thank you for the opportunity of…’ or ‘It has been an honour for me to …’.

Step 5:
Follow that up with your decision to resign your present position giving a positive outlook to your future.

Step 6:
Mention the benefits and knowledge that you have acquired with this employment, and then suggest what you are hoping to acquire with your new employment in respect to pursuing your career.

Step 7:

End your letter with a word of encouragement and best wishes for the company’s future progress.

Step 8:
Deliver your letter in person and dress as if it was your first interview. Do not give it to someone else to present or leave it to be picked up.

Step 9:
Keep your attitude and your actions positive and without prejudice when speaking with your supervisor. Do not blame others for your decision to resign even if that is the case.

Step 10:
Continue to work your remaining days with the best interest of the company in mind and to the best of your ability. Do not become irresponsible in your appointment but rather leave with a good impression of your character.
